Transition from Marketplace to Missions
Mark and Marchelle Slone have been married for 35 years and are the parents of three adult children. Before entering full-time ministry, Mark enjoyed a successful 32-year career. He worked in Project Management and Engineering. He specialized in capital expenditure and maintenance projects. Marchelle is a trained chef, a skill set that complements her hospitality-focused ministry.
The Call to Africa
Mark’s formal theological journey began at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), where he earned a Master of Theology (ThM) in 2009. His mission work evolved through a series of pivotal trips:
– Initial Steps: A 2009 trip to Guatemala came first. This was followed by a 2011 short-term mission to Ghana with WorldVenture. The mission focused on leadership training and women’s empowerment.
– Vision Trips: Mark later explored ministry opportunities in Rwanda and Uganda.
– Full-Time Appointment: They professed a call to missions in 2016. Their pastor at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Houston confirmed it. The couple was officially appointed by WorldVenture in 2020.
Current Ministry in Uganda
The Slones are currently stationed in Uganda, where they provide academic and pastoral support:
1. Theological Education: Mark served at the Western Uganda Baptist Theological College. He joined Sufficiency of Scripture (SOS) Ministries in January 2024. He is now the Assistant Dean of Administration at Shepherds Training College. Mark is also a professor there. He teaches courses such as Marriage and Family and Biblical Interpretation.
2. Women’s Discipleship: Marchelle focuses on identity-based discipleship. She helps Ugandan women understand their value in Christ. She also supports them in recognizing their roles within their families and churches.
3. Marriage Ministry: They have launched marriage ministries. These address a critical need for biblical family foundations in the region.
They are the 2nd full-time missionaries from the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church (Houston, TX)!
