Birds of a feather, flock together; or so the saying goes. Has it ever occurred to you, however, that as human beings the saying would be more fitting – If you flock with those birds, you’ll end up like them. When we are young we are told to be aware of peer pressure; no one tells us that peer pressure sticks around for the rest of our lives. It would be so much easier to get along in this world if we could just do what everyone else is doing and say what everyone else is saying; we, however, though in this world, are not of this world. As I have dealt with peer pressure over the years – the biggest battle was always fighting against being concerned about others impression of me. I wanted to be accepted; I wanted to be seen as competent, successful, wise, etc. There were always two problems: one was that I could NEVER satisfy everybody so I was always left wanting, and the second was that I was often tempted to compromise my principles in order to have that acceptance. I decided to change my thinking and live only for an audience of One; and that revolutionized my living! I fixed my mind on Him and things began to change. Society tries to sell us a picture that says – you can have one foot in the Body of Christ and the other in the world; but we know that this is not truth. The Word of God tells us that you must choose your master – because if you have two, you will despise one of them. Society says that we can have a mask that we wear with different groups of people; the Word of God says that a a person whose thoughts are divided will never be stable. Society says that success looks like having the finest house, car and clothes that money can buy. But the Word of God says you are blessed when “you’re at the end of your rope. … you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. … you’re content with just who you are … you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. … you care. ,,, you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. … you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. … your commitment to God provokes persecution.” Further, the Word of God says that we are blessed when we find our delight in Him. When you immerse yourself in the culture of the world, you will find that you will not be satisfied; there is no way that this world can satisfy you! There is no way you can satisfy this world. The carnal life always leaves you wanting; desiring; empty. I challenge you today to search God’s Word for two things: who God is & who you are because of God. As you begin to understand the investment that God made into your life through Calvary; I really do believe that your mind will be able to stand against the world’s desires and that you will be able to embrace God’s perfect will for your life. As you take back your mind from the world and give it back to God, I know that your life will become richer, fuller, more satisfying. For those of you reading this who are Christ followers: I will get you started with two truths about God and two truths about you. About God: God is good and God loves you. About you: You are a child of God and you will not be condemned by God. Start with those two thoughts today; you might just find that at the end of this day your mind will have already begun to change — to renew.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NASB)
